A myriad of small-scale and large-scale industries have come to realize the efficiency and cost-effectivity of H2O electrolysis splitting water as an industrial process. Although this chemical process has been used repeatedly in chemistry classes as a demonstration of a decomposition reaction of water, it has come to find its use in major industries world-wide, especially in industries that require the generation of Hydrogen gas through a mechanism that is easy and that does not harm the environment.
H2O electrolysis splitting water provides an easy way to acquire Hydrogen in a form that is easily manipulated and that does not leave any harmful residues. H2O electrolysis splitting water as a process was first demonstrated by William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle. Throughout the years, H2O electrolysis splitting water has been refined and perfected by countless scientists and agents of science since its discovery in the eighteen hundreds. The process of H2O electrolysis splitting water takes advantage of the property of water to conduct an electric current. Water, which is made up of an atom of Oxygen and two atoms of Hydrogen, easily decompose into its constituent elements when a strong electric current is run through it.
Characteristic of the H2O electrolysis splitting water process, is a set up which includes an electrical power source which usually is connected to two electrodes, the cathode which is the negatively charged electrode, and the anode which is the positively charged electrode. The two electrodes usually take the form of two metal plates typically made from stable forms of the metals platinum or stainless steel. The electrodes are then placed in the water and an electric current is then run through the water. Since Hydrogen atoms are positively charged, they gather at the cathode which is rich in electrons, while Oxygen atoms, which are negatively charged, will gather at the anode. Since water is made up of two Hydrogen and One Oxygen atoms respectively, it follows that the amount of generated amount of hydrogen will be twice as much as the amount of oxygen that is generated, and both will be proportional to the overall electric charge which was applied to the water. The energy that is used for the electrolysis of water is typically acquired from a battery.
H2O electrolysis splitting water though is not simple, when you have to consider the purity of the water you are using because generally, pure water takes a long time to undergo complete electrolysis, and this possibility can only happen because of water's ability to self-ionize. Scientific studies have provided the fact that pure water's electrical conductivity is only about one millionth that of seawater. Years of refinement of the H2O electrolysis splitting water process yielded methods to speed up the electrolysis of pure water. One sure way to speed up the process is to add an electrolyte usually in the form of a salt, an acid, or a base.
H2O electrolysis splitting water is generally done in large-scale units so that large amounts of Hydrogen gas is produces to be used in a number of industries such as the production of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars.
Cars That Run on Water Tip #1
No matter what anybody tells you, there is not yet a water powered car in production. That is an urban myth that reached its peak with Stanley Meyer who claimed that he drove one hundred miles using only four ounces of water (he was later convicted of fraud). The water powered engine hasn't even been invented yet. Scientists are still trying to figure out if it is even possible. |
Cars That Run on Water Tip #2
Many major car manufacturers are embracing the idea of the hydrogen car. BMW hopes to release a hydrogen car to the public by 2008 (or 2010 at the latest) and other manufacturers like Toyota are also making plans to release hydrogen car lines. Of course the debate over using hydrogen in cars is still raging and nothing has been settled yet. |
Cars That Run on Water Tip #3
While both a water based engine and a hydrogen engine will do wonders for fuel emissions and the environment, one of the major reasons people want them is to improve their fuel mileage. Of course, gas mileage can be improved right now. You can improve your gas mileage drastically just by driving sensibly and making sure your car is maintained properly. |
